Poker player Jake Cody won just shy of $60,000 when he took down the partypoker UK Poker Championships “high roller” event on Monday night at England’s Dusk Till Dawn Casino.
Nothing too remarkable about that – a prolific tournament player, Cody has over $4.5 million in tournament winnings and is Britain’s tenth most successful poker player of all-time. It’s what he did next that has everyone talking.
Cody took his winnings straight to the roulette tables and plonked them all on black, every penny, double or nothing. (Don’t try it at home.)
Dusk Till Dawn owner Ron Yong, a poker player himself and long-time friend of the UK poker community, sensing a publicity op, readily agreed to accept the bet. He even spun the wheel himself.
Raucous Scenes
Footage of the event, captured on various smartphones and quickly uploaded to social media platforms, show Cody full of smiles but noticeably tense as Yong sets the ball in motion and the wheel spinning.
They say you have to win a bunch of coin flips to come first in a poker tournament. Cody was just testing that theory to the max, extending the tournament to one, final, monster flip for all the money.
The wheel shot round for what must have seemed like an eternity for Cody and Yong, before dropping, finally, on…
Red. Cody had lost the lot.
Just kidding, it was black, and the crowd exploded. Raucous scenes ensued. They may be used to single bets like these on the VIP baccarat of Macau, but to the clientele of Dusk Till Dawn, a poker-focused casino in England’s Midlands, it’s something a bit special. A man who had the balls to bet it all and win.
Let’s just say drinks were on Cody.
Viral Potential
“NO GAMBLE, NO FUTURE!” Cody typed later as he retweeted the video doing the rounds of his moment of triumph.
And boy, is it doing the rounds! With thousands of views in just a few days, the video is currently being picked up by the mainstream media.
Curiously enough, while Cody finished first in the event, he agreed to a four-way chop when there were four players left. That’s a sensible thing to do in a poker tournament – chops offer players insurance and guard against variance.
Quite why he them decided to put everything on the line on a high-variance roulette wager, we have no idea. But we’re glad he did.
